Google Wave

Few products get raved so much that you hear about them almost every single day of your life. Whether its on the web, radio, word of mouth, or TV you often hear the words Facebook, Twitter, or the iPhone. There is something that will be released soon called Google Wave that will knock all three of these topics out of the water. Wave is an open source collaborative tool that is going to change everything. Lars and Jens Rasmussen are the creators of Google Wave, also known as the creators of Google Maps, and they have been working on this new innovative product over the past 2 years.

The web has increasingly made the web a better place to communicate with one another and new innovative tools like Blogs, Instant Messengers, Wiki’s, social networks and forums have all enabled us to connect with one another very well. Google Wave takes it 10 steps further and has plans to incorporate all these tools into a very easy to use “Wave”. Never before could anyone connect with someone so easily in real time. If your a small, medium, large, extra-large business your going to want to pay attention to this tool. Since its open-source you can install your own Wave platform on your own servers. This means information sent through your waves will never be seen by Google. Larger companies usually steer away from Google for this reason. When I heard this my jaw dropped down to the floor and literally said “wow”. Google just made some developers very happy, and others will rage at Waves existence.

After watching the Wave conference video that I have posted below you will have a very good idea of where the web is going. Everyone will be using this tool in a matter of 2-3 years, maybe even shorter. The key is for businesses to find use of these free tools and collaborate more efficiently with their employees and clients. Google Wave allows multiple people to work on documents, emails, well pretty much anything, and it tracks the changes people are doing in real time right in front of everyone’s eyes. If you currently don’t have a “wave” open and you log in to the shared wave, all the updates to the document or email are all highlighted for you, while showing you who made them.

The coolest and international flavor part about Google Wave is how it handles translation. If your talking to someone who has their language set to Chinese, your posts will show up in their language right away on their end. (You can see this at the very end of the video). These types of products are how the world becomes a more friendly and collaborative place. I absolutely love the idea of Google Wave.

I watched this video a few months ago now and Google Wave looks like a huge threat to all email/IM platforms. It all depends on how the open source community embraces it…Just like the iPhone, it wouldn’t be much if it didn’t have tons of apps to download.

  • I agree Jacob! Thanks for the comment!
