keywords
So this is somewhat of a follow up to the last post but if you are starting a small business online you will need to understand the importance of being found when people search for a particular keyword or search term.
If someone doesn’t know anything about your business, but wants a product or service that you offer, they usually will search for you or a company similar to yours in a search engine. Being at the top of the search rankings for important key terms for your business is priceless. My business, Memorywalk, uses Memorial Video for our #1 keyword. We use Memorial Video for serveral reasons:
1. Its a common term that many people use
2. It directly pertains to our core product offerings name
3. Our competitors use this keyword/search term
4. 2 and 3 word searches are more common today than any other. Stats can be found here.
After a month of putting our site live, Memorywalk.ca now has the following search rankings for the term “Memorial Video” - Msn #3 - Yahoo #5 - Google #36. We of course will be working extremely hard to get our Google ranking up but we are ecstatic about our rankings from the get go, and we believe we are on track to be near the top for the search term “Memorial Video” as well as a few other keywords that our company has chosen.
If you want to find out what terms are searched for the most there are many tools that can estimate these statistics but none are completely accurate. One tool i suggest you use is Google Trends. Other than that you need to use your head with this and its something that should take some serious thought. A small focus group to ask what terms first come to mind would be very helpful.
The Memorial video is our #1 search term, but its also important to have the name of your business indexed well, and a second term that is common in the text on your website. It’s also beneficial if you can see people including a certain keyword in forums or reviews about your site. The more often someone uses a keyword in reference to your business the better you will get ranked in the long run.
If you think about these things before you start writing content for your site I hope you will come back to thank me someday! Just joking, but in all honesty this is important information that many IT companies and web designers do not include when they build their website for you. Building a website and your websites content is actually much more complicated than what many large “get your business up and running in 2 days” companies set it out to be.
If you keep reading this Blog you won’t miss out on anything. I provide all the important details about getting a business online that is truly near impossible to find in one spot.

Well this keyword thing is hard to master. Maybe it is easier to just make up unique ones and hope they become popular.
