Want to work in the tech industry?
So your thinking about working in the tech industry and want to get some feedback from people who are in it before you make any giant leaps. I can only give my own opinion of this of course but I work with many other “techies” so I know the types of personalities that strive in this industry and which ones that don’t.
Most people who walk into the tech industry blindly find out that weekends don’t really exist most of the year and you often find yourself forgetting what day it is because of this. Ok, maybe that’s a bit harsh, but I want everyone who is thinking about jumping in the pond to understand the tech industry takes that extra effort on everyone’s part to make something special. If you’re a family man that needs to be home at 5:15 every weekday and spend time with the kids on weekends then it will be tough for you to move up in your field of choice, mainly because there are many people out there that live and breath what they do.
The tech industry is a hot commodity and everyone is looking for the hot new gadget, or what is new and modern on the web. In the past 10 years it seems as though everything has started evolving around technology and the web. I hear more about facebook and youtube these days than any hot new TV show or song. If someone is talking about a new TV show or song it most likely is because they found it or people talking about it on the web. Get the picture?
With a fast paced tech world comes a high demand for people who are dedicated and very intelligent. The people who are looking for a 9-5 get left in the dust and the tech industry can be tough on the average Joe. Competitive personality types will succeed in the tech industry and people who find it easy to multitask will have an immediate advantage.
The tech industry is most likely the most risky business to be in. Entrepreneurs do well in this business because they know success comes after failure, and sometimes failing more than once or twice. If you lose your job, or the entire company goes under you have to continuously be learning and building your skills. There is no room to be not confident about what you are doing. If you are the worrying type the tech industry is most likely not for you.
My last piece of advice would the most important. In the tech industry, no matter what position you hold, you continuously must brand yourself as the best in your field. If you’re not the best, get educated and become the best. Can you keep a job for 40 years and not learn anything in the tech industry? NO! It’s one of the most demanding jobs to continuously educate yourself on. Whatever your field is, it changes constantly. What you knew 2 years ago will help but technology rules/concepts/behaviors change everyday.
If you are up for a challenge and want to be a part of something extremely special, there is nothing quite like the tech industry. The pay is above average but you have to work for it. I hope this post helps anyone who is interested in the field.
